EMI(EMC) Shielded Windows

by Tony Losey last modified 2006-10-26 10:57

Miller Dial provides a complete range of optical filter. These optical filters have an embedded metal mesh providing a significant depreciation of the effect of electromagnetic fields. Our filters can be produced in a wide variety of colors. We always have a filter appropriate for the wavelength in your display. Miller Dial's EMI shielded windows achieve optimal light transmission. Secondary light is filtered out, obtaining the clearest, readable readout.

Miller Dial To Be Sole US Distributor For PSC EMC Products

Miller Dial announced today that they have signed an agreement with PSC, out of Denmark, to be the sole US distributor for their EMC products and coatings.

PSC, in business since 1948, has spent the last 20 years focusing only on optical filters for the filtering of light and radio interference in electronic instruments. Known throughout Europe as the leader in their field PSC chose Miller Dial as their exclusive source for US distribution.

Miller Dial, having been in business for close to 70 years, is an industry leader in the membrane switch and electronics industry. “The addition of the PSC line answers the call from our customers to be able to provide them with this solution” said Jim Kaldem, Miller Dial’s General Manager. “PSC is clearly the industry leader and to be able to partner like this not only satisfies current demand but opens the door to new opportunities by placing us in a marketplace that clearly needs a new player”. “Our intention is to offer the best possible product available at competitive pricing”. Properties of EMI Shielded Windows

Miller Dial embeds our metal mesh as an integral part of the acrylic filter. Utilizing this technique, our shielded windows enable a reduction in the unnecessary refraction surfaces. We utilize stainless steel for most shielding applications but alternate mesh materials are available for other applications (ie. copper mesh).

Certain types of displays visually interfere with the metal mesh located directly above them. The resulting effect (Moire) can be avoided by rotating the mesh at a specific angle in relation to the type of display used. Miller Dial provides EMI Shielded Windows that can be mounted at angles between 0 and 45 degrees. Acrylic sheets can be molded with embedded mesh in sizes up 1000 x 1500mm. Request A Quote

Transmission and Sheilding

Embedded mesh and it's relationship with display readability is a key factor in the implementation of EMI Shielded Windows. This is typically measured via light transmittance. The molding technique used to embed the metal mesh in acrylic yields a light transmittance of 78% compared to transparent acrylic.

Embedding metal mesh in an acrylic filter has minimal significance as far as the spectral characteristic of the EMI Shielded Window is concerned. The steel mesh is not reflective. When mixing the color, prior to molding, adjustments are made to compensate for the transmission attenuation caused by the mesh. Request A Quote

Cabinet Contact

Our Shielded windows comply with the specified testing data when electrical contact is made between the entire perimeter of the mesh and the cabinet of the apparatus. This contact is established by applying conductive silver or nickel paint to the edge of the filter. The EMI Shielded window should then be mounted in the panel with a conducting gasket or conducting glue. Request A Quote

Additional Refinements of EMI Shielded Windows

EMI Shielded Windows can be supplied with a variety of surface finishes. A matte finish can reduce distracting reflections without reducing the quality of the display. It is also possible to have the shielded windows machined, laser cut, or milled. Our shielded windows can also be screen printed in our state of the art manufacturing facility. Request A Quote
